Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, which was not enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The Gunners had won the first leg 2-0 in North London, but they were unable to build on that advantage in Portugal.
Leandro Trossard gave Arsenal the lead in the 41st minute, but Sporting Lisbon equalized through Pedro Goncalves in the 54th minute.
The game went to extra-time, but neither side was able to find a winning goal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team were "disappointed" not to have won the tie, but he praised their performance.
"We gave it everything we had, but it wasn't enough," he said.
"We created chances, but we didn't take them. We also made some mistakes defensively, which cost us in the end.
"But I'm proud of my players for the effort they put in. They fought until the end, and they gave everything they had."
Arsenal will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they are currently top of the table.
They will be hoping to maintain their lead at the top of the table when they face Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
