WEB Marseille and Atalanta Advance in Europa League

Marseille Downs Benfica on Penalties

WEB Marseille advanced to the semifinals of the Europa League after defeating Benfica 4-2 on penalties following a 1-0 win in the second leg in France on Thursday. The French side took the lead in the 45th minute through a goal from Matteo Guendouzi, and held on to their advantage for the rest of the match. In the penalty shootout, Marseille goalkeeper Pau López saved two Benfica penalties to seal the victory.

Atalanta to Face Marseille in Semifinals

In the other quarterfinal, Atalanta defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 in Italy. The Italian side took the lead in the 17th minute through a goal from Duván Zapata, and doubled their advantage in the 58th minute through a goal from Mario Pašalić. Atalanta will now face Marseille in the semifinals, with the first leg taking place in Bergamo on May 4 and the second leg taking place in Marseille on May 11.

Liverpool Take Commanding Lead

Liverpool took a commanding position in their Europa League last-16 tie with Sparta Prague by winning the first leg 5-1 at Stadion Letná on Thursday. The English side took the lead in the 12th minute through a goal from Sadio Mané, and doubled their advantage in the 21st minute through a goal from Mohamed Salah. Liverpool added three more goals in the second half, with Diogo Jota scoring in the 52nd minute, Andy Robertson scoring in the 78th minute, and Takumi Minamino scoring in the 84th minute.
